Introduction

top

Today's companies are committed to preserving the environment in their local communities and around the world by developing environmental management systems that guide their performance. ISO 14001 defines the organizational structure and responsibilities needed for managing a company's environmental objectives.

ISO 14001 is expected to be the most widely recognized international benchmark for environmental system development. It facilitates a company's commitment and implementation of its environmental management policy.

ISO 14001 Standard

top

ISO 14001 is a standard stating the requirements for an organization to develop and implement an Environmental Management System (EMS). It is intended to establish and assess the effectiveness of an organization's ability to develop and meet a defined policy and objectives related to the environment. This standard does not establish absolute requirements for environmental performance, instead placing the responsibility for commitment to the defined policy, compliance to legal and regulatory issues and continuous improvement with the organization.

Many organizations that have already developed a Quality Management System and have achieved ISO 9001, ISO 9002 or QS-9000:1998 may choose to integrate their EMS into the existing Management System. In many cases, this saves companies a great deal of time, work and money.

Phase I - Technical Review and evaluation of management system documents
The Technical Review is a required visit to the client's facility during which the following information is reviewed and evaluated:

a. environmental policy
b. organization's determination of aspects and impacts
c. an overview of regulations and permits
d. the EMS System's documentation (manual & procedures)
e. the scope of the EMS
f. confirmation or modification of time requirements
g. identification of any necessary technical expertise

h. This review must be conducted on-site. Without this visit a registration cannot be issued. This visit must be between six weeks and 6 months before the registration audit.

Phase II - Registration Audit
The Registration Audit includes a formal review of the Environmental Management System's effectiveness against ISO 14001 and their internal procedures. This visit is to ensure that objective evidence exists to demonstrate that requirements have been met.

Upon completion of the audit, the client will be notified of the outcome of the audit in a closing meeting. During the closing meeting the client is presented an audit report that describes the audit results and includes any deviations that may have been found.

A registration audit ending in no deviations or only minor deviations will receive a recommendation for registration by the audit team.

TÜV Rheinland of Iran's goal is to team with you to help your company achieve a certified environmental management system. We understand your need to implement environmentally proactive policy. We also realize that timely, cost-effective ISO 14001 registration is key to reflecting your commitment and distinguishing yourself from the competition.

How does this registration process work?

TÜV Rheinland's ISO 14001 registration process is similar to the ISO 9000 registration process. Once the environmental management system has been prepared and implemented, the following steps must be taken:

1.

Application/Contract
We will determine the scope of the registration, location, and number of facilities and employees to be audited. Our fixed price quotation includes the costs incurred over the first three years of your ISO 14001 registration.

2.

Pre-Audit Option
We offer an optional pre-audit that can be used as an additional tool to determine the readiness of your environmental management system. For the pre-audit, you can choose which elements of ISO 14001 will be applied to your system.

3.

Documentation Review (Phase I)
TÜV Rheinland of Iran, will evaluate the readiness of your organization for a formal audit.

4.

Certification Assessment (Phase II)
An on-site assessment will be conducted to confirm whether the EMS complies with ISO 14001 standard requirements. After successful completion and review of the corrective action proposals, your company will be recommended for registration.

5.

Certification
After an independent review, TÜV Rheinland will issue your ISO 14001 certificate.

6.

Certification Maintenance (Surveillance)
Annual surveillance visits maintain the integrity of your Environmental Management System.
